The Richmond Times automobile pages describe how tourists are flocking to warmth of Florida to escape northern blizzards, influenza and coal bills. The Automobile Blue Book of 1918 documented 24,000 miles of southern roads for the first time. The Richmond, Virginia  health officer has declared "war" on "secret diseases" (STDs), and in Newport News "negro stevedores" are shot on by troops.
