March 4, 1918

A day that lives in epidemiologic infamy: the first private checked in with influenza at Camp Funston according to John Barry's Great Influenza, (Viking New York, NY, 2004 p.96). The event at Camp Funston is not reported. In North Carolina the execution of a black man, Earl Neville, is reported just above a rummage sale. NC Governor Bickett has had to intervene to dissuade a lynch-mob from meting out their own form of justice.
